Lonicera
Family: Caprifoliaceae
English: Honeysuckle

This is a climber with thin, white or pink, sweetly scented flowers known since antiquity. To those suffering from ailments of the spleen, Pliny commends a remedy consisting of a cut from this plant immersed in wine for 4-5 days. The Chinese used a species of this plant as cathartic.

Their trumpet-shaped, sweetly scented flowers are borne in terminal groups. Inflorescence lasts from May to July.

The following species occur in Greece: L. etrusca, L. xylostema, L. nummulariifolia.
From the lonicera flowers an extract is produced that is said to be good for treating cough, bronchitis and asthma.
