Meat Pie
( Kreatópita )
1 portion (1 large slice), calories: 380. Cooking time: 50-60 minutes.
Ingredients
For a medium-sized baking tin
500 grms of mince
500 grms of ready-made or home-made Pastry
1 ˝ cups of butter
˝ cup of breadcrumbs
˝ cup of dry white wine
4 onions
3 eggs, beaten
2 eggs, hard boiled
Salt, pepper
Method
Peel the onions and cut into thin slices. Put half the butter in a frying pan with the onions and fry until lightly browned. Add the mince and mix till the juice from the mince has been absorbed.
Allow to stand for a short while then pour in the wine and cook slowly for 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Cut the hard boiled eggs into pieces, add the breadcrumbs and the beaten eggs to the mince. Butter a baking tin and spread the greater part of the pastry in it, making sure enough is left over to cover the top; the pastry should be well greased.
Put in the mince mixture, spreading it evenly over the pastry and then cover with the rest of the pastry which was left over. Trim the edges and butter the outside of the pastry before baking in a moderate oven for 50-60 minutes.
Variation for the filling of meat pie:-
600 grms boiled lamb chopped into cubes
1 ˝ cups of mezithra or anthotiro cheese (From Crete, if possible)
1 cup of buttermilk
3-4 spring onions, finely chopped
1 yolk of egg
Mint, salt, pepper
Combine all the ingredients and use the filling for the same baking tin with the same proportions of pastry.
