300ml/½ pint/1¼ cups dark rum
45ml/3 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar
1 star anise
1. Pour the rum into a heatproof jug (pitcher) and add the sugar and star anise. Pour in 450ml/¾ pint/scant 2 cups boiling water and stir thoroughly until the sugar has dissolved.
2. Carefully pour the hot toddy into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve immediately.
