Glaucium Flavum
Family: Papaveraceae
English: Violet Horned-Poppies
This plant gives the impression of a sea anemone, as its golden-yellow flowers, that look more like those of a red poppy, are noticed mainly along sandy shores or in dry, uncultivated plots near the sea.
It blooms from May to August and its fruits are oblong and horn-like. When cut, the plant exudes a kind of milky juice.
In Greece it occurs in two more species: Glaucium leiocarpum and G. corniculatum. The crushed or boiled petals of this plant were used to treat cough and bronchitis.
Popular Greek names:
"Yalopikro", "Anemohorto".
