Ingredients

3 ½ cups of flour
½ teaspoon of salt
1 lb. of orange slices (gumdrops)
2 cups of walnuts, chopped
1 (3 ¼ oz.) can of flaked coconut
1 (8 oz.) pkg. of dates, chopped
1 cup of butter or margarine
2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon of soda
½ cup of buttermilk
1 cup of orange juice
2 cups of powdered sugar

 

Method

Combine and set aside, the cut up orange slices, chopped walnuts, chopped dates and flaked coconut. Add ½ cup of the flour mixture, to the orange slice mixture, mixing well. Work with spoon until light, the butter. Add the sugar and beat well. Add the eggs, one at a time. Combine the soda and buttermilk. Add alternately with flour mixture. Blend well after each addition. Add candy mixture, mix well. Turn into tube pan, greased and floured.

 

Bake at 300ºF for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Mix well the orange juice and powdered sugar. Pour this mixture over the hot cake. Let stand overnight in the refrigerator before removing from the pan. Punch holes in cake with an ice pick so the glaze will soak into the cake.
